GlobalChain can use, but does not require GTINs or UPCs for a Product / Trade Item.

An event is when a Product / Trade Item is undergoing a step in its business lifecycle where data needs to be recorded for traceability or compliance purposes. In GlobalChain, these events are broken down into eight categories and each can be further subdivided to best capture the business-specific step that is being taken and in need of a data record [e.g., a transform event is used whenever raw material is processed into final goods; an aggregate event is used whenever cases are loaded onto a pallet or into a container].
